WHEREAS, the 20th
the week of April 3-9,
"Morrie Monarch," King
RESOLUTION ND. ~®~ 8~
Annual Morrie Monarch Festival was held during
1983, in Hilo, a tribute to Hawaii's beloved
Oavid Kalakaua; and
WHEREAS, each year, this festival peaks with Hawaii's premiere
hula competition Peaturing an individual wahine hula, a kane and
wahine group hula kahiko (ancient hula}, a kane and wahine group
hula auwana (modern hula) and the kane and wahine overall
competition; and
WHEREAS, performing in these competitions are members
representing the best of hula halaus who have been fostering the
expressive and cultural heritage of our State; and
WHEREAS, for this 20th Morrie Monarch Festival, Kumu Hula Johnny
Lum Ho and his Halau D Ka Ua Kani Lehua has been recognized as the
best halau at the festival; repeating those honors once before
bestowed at the 19th Morrie Monarch Festival; and
WHEREAS, the men of Ha1au 0 Ka Ua Kani Lehua took top honors in
the men's overall competition by sweeping first place in both the
hula kahiko and hula auwana kane division; and
WHEREAS, the women of Halau 0 Ka Ua Kani Lehua won the wahine
overall competition by placing first in the hula auwana and second
in the hula kahiko wahine division; and
WHEREAS, Geola Pua, a talented and lovely member of the Halau 0
Ka Ua Kani Lehua, was crowned Miss Aloha Hula 1983 as the best
individual wahine dancer from a field of 19 entrants; and
WHEREAS, Geola, became the fourth consecutive Miss P.loha Hula
trained by Kumu Hula Lum Ho and ,joins Kaula Kamahele, Miss Aloha
Huia 1960, Brenda Alidon, Miss Aloha Hula 1981 and Kanani Oda,
Miss Aloha Hula 1982, as a testament to Kumu Hula Johnny Lum Ho.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it takes this means to congratulate Kumu Hula Johnny
Lum Ho and his Ha1au 0 Ka Ua Kani Lehua on this most impressive
performances snd victories at the 20th Annual Morrie Monarch
Festival.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council extends its
congratulations and best wishes to Geola Pua of the Halau 0 Ka Ua
Kani Lehua, the crowned and most deserving winner of the 1983 Miss
Aloha FIuIa title of the 20th Annual Morrie Monarch Festival.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit copies of this Resolution to Kumu Hula Johnny Lum Ho;
Miss Geola Pua, Miss Aloha liula 1983; to Kaula Kamehele,
Brenda Alidon and Kanani Uda, Miss Aloha Hulas for 1980, 1981 and
1982.
