County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, there is critical need for Hawaii to develop alternate
energy sources due to Hawaii's heavy dependence on imported oil and
the high cost of energy; and
WHEREAS, the BioEnergy Development Corporation, a Hawaiian
corporation, is requesting the U. S. Department of Energy to grant
$2.6 million to continue research for five more years; and
WHEREAS, with renewal of this cooperative "Demonstration
Project," plantings will be increased from 620 acres to
approximately 4,000 acres, which will enable BioEnergy to assess the
economic feasibility of growing Eucalyptus trees on a commercial
basis; and
WHEREAS, if successful, this project will be a monumental step
toward reducing Hawaii's dependency on oil and will be a major
economic factor toward stabilizing the cost of living here in Hawaii.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that the Council humbly request the Congress of the United
States of America to approve the $2.6 million needed to allow
BioEnergy Development Corporation to continue this priority project
for Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
send copies of this Resolution to the Honorable George Bush,
President of the Senate; the Honorable Thomas O'Neill, Speaker of
the House; the Honorable Senators Daniel K. Inouye and
Spark M. Matsunaga; and the Honorable Representatives Daniel K.
Akaka and Cecil Heftel.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
also send a copy of this Resolution to Mr. Thomas B. Crabb, Vice
President and Manager of BioEnergy Development Corporation.
