RESOLUTION ND. ~~~ ~~
WHEREAS, George Martin, a former long-time resident of Hawaii
who was born, reared and educated on the Big Island, has now
retired from his illustrious career as an international labor
leader; and
WHEREAS, during h1r. Martin's almost forty years with the
International Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Unien (ILWU), he
rose Prom the rank and file, progressing from a mechanic at the
former Onomea Suyar Company beginning in 1944, to elected Hawaii
Division Vice President of Local 142 from 1949 through 1952, to
Hawaii Division Oirectar from 1952 to 1971 and finally to the high
elected post of International Vice President-Director of
Organization, the position he has held since 1971 until his
retirement; and
WHEREAS, despite George Martin's dedication to his important
union responsibilities, during his stay in Hilo he still found
time to devote towards community service and capably served on
various County and State hoards and commissions.
NUai, THEREFORE, f3E IT RESOLVED f3Y THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in recognition of George Martin, a native son, who
helped to nurture and mold the present day imminence of the ILWU
and for his community-oriented deeds, hereby extends its best
e~ishes and all tiie pleasures that comes with retirement.
3E IT FLJRTHER RESOLVED that tt'ie Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be instructed to .remit true copies of this resolution to
Mr. George Martin, the newly retired International Vice President
of the ILWU.
