HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 587 Draft 01 1980-1984,,. 0 RESOLUTIOPi N0. s~~ ~3 WHEREAS, Eileen Dempster, a retired nurse from California and a 34g Island resident of 12 years, t•~as been selected as one of the ten statewide winners in the annual Thomas Jefferson Awards competition; and VIHEREAS, the Thomas Jefferson Awards competition recognizes those members of oux cammuni.ty who have demonstrated unselfish dedication to humanitarian causes; and WHEREAS, Eileen Dempster, first learned of her daughter's slight mental retardation 34 years ago, and whereon shortly thereafter, it was eiiscovered that her daughter suffered from the crippling disease--polio; and WHEREAS, rather than being overcome by this misfortunes, 'cileen Dempster rose to the challenge and turned her. tragedies into blessings by giving her st.r.ength in assisting others to cope with similar ailments; and WHEREAS, .in Nearly 4O years of voluntary work, she has seen retarded children literal 7.y brought out of the closet and taken into schools and.~shelters where they can learn skills and become semi.-independent: NOW, THEREFORE, 6E IT RESOLVED BY .THE COUt`ICIL DF THE CDUNTY OF HAWAII that it extends its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Eileen Dempster fox the humanitarian 'contributions she has made to our island community and congratulate her on the oecasi.on of this recognition an d. wish her well i.n the national competition.
