WHEREAS, the'KOhala High School basketball team capped a
highly competitive and exciting season by winning the overall 1983
Big Island Interscholastic Federation {BIIF) basketball
championship with a thrilling overtime victcry over the defending
champions, the Wa,iakes Warriors; and
SVHEREAS, this young Cowboy team, headed by first year coach
Joe Mattos, had a creditable 16-3 wSn-loss season record,
including a i3-game victory streak, and featured a good offense
averaging 62.'7. points a game and a solid defense which limited its
opponents to 51.2 points per game; and
WHEREAS, the Kohala Cowboys well-earned BIIF championship also
secured them a preferential seeding far the State Tournament held
in Honolulu (March 9-12, 1983) in which the Cowboys made a eery
respectable showing against the twelve of tiie best basketball
teams in the State of Hawaii.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that i.t extends its congratulations to the Kohala Ftigh
School basketball team and coach Joe Mattos for winning the 1983
BIIF Championship and for providing its supporters and sports fans
a most enjoyable and successful basketball season.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to team
members Bradley Estabilio; Sean Francisco; Lance Cazimero; Robert
Halbritter; Harold Alcoran; St~ayne Kaohu; Joseph Pule; Rueben
Vinluan, Dudley Moniz; Edgar Bruno; Reid Maekawa; Matthew
Roxburgh; William Dela Cruz; Coach Joe Mattos; Assistant Coach
Raymond Roche; Principal Clarence Mllls; and Athletic Director
William McPeek. ,
