County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, U. S. Senators Spark M. Matsunaga and Edward Kennedy,
supported by eight other Democratic Senators, introduced a $5.7
billion emergency jobs bill that would provide an estimated
750,000 jobs for unemployed Americans; and ,
WHEREAS, the bill also includes $1 billion for training
programs aimed at the long-term unemployed and $600 million for
emergency food, shelter, and clothing for the jobless and their
families; and
WHEREAS, the emergency jobs proposal would channel funds to
local government to use for needed community services such as
housing rehabilitation, street repair, day care, meals for the
elderly, public safety, and repair of sewer and water systems; and
WHEREAS, the persistence of unemployment throughout the nation
and Hawaii may be eased by this stimulus to the economy when
discretionary expenses such as vacations are taken thereby
relieving the local unemployment picture.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it wholeheartedly supports the Senators in this
legislation which takes immediate steps to provide jobs and
assistance to the 12 million unemployed Americans who cannot
afford to wait for the long-promised economic recovery.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is hereby instructed to remit copies of this Resolution to
Senator. Spark M. Matsunaga, Governor George R. Ariyoshi and
Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi.
