RESOLUTION NO. 563 83
WHEREAS, the Big Island Chapter of the Hawaii Society of
Professional Engineers (HSPE) selected Alva K.~Nakamura as
"Engineer of the Year"; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nakamura, an electrical engineer, is noted
for his leadership quality in planning the present and future
needs of electric power and is presently responsible for Hawaii
Electric Light Co.'s System Planning Department; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nakamura, a production-oriented manager who
believes that the success of his department depends on the
individual's ability and capacity to assume job responsibilities,
has created good teamwork in the engineering department; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nakamura was instrumental in determining the
interconnection requirements between Wind Power Pacific, Inc.,
and HELCo at Kohala's Kahua Ranch which generates 6-25KW electric
power with Jay Carter System wind turbine induction generator; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nakamura is presently designing HELCo's future
cross-island transmission line requirements to serve the 70 Megawatt
West Hawaii load in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nakamura also has an interesting challenge in
power transmission interconnect with the projected 25MW geothermal
plants in Puna to substations in Puna and to the Kaumana switching
stations which feed power to West Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nakamura presently serves as chairman of the School
Advisory Council, Secretary of HSPE, and was active in other community
services as president of senior YBA for Higashi Honwangji, Hawaii
National Electric Code Committee and Hawaii Community College Drafting
and Electrical Curriculum Advisory Committee.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it congratulates Mr. Alva K. Nakamura for being
selected "Engineer of the Year" and commends the Big Island Chapter
of the Society of Professional Engineers for making this very
appropriate selection.
