Resolution
WHEREAS, police and court records document that there
continues to be an alarming increase in violence associated with
spouse and child abuse; and
WHEREAS, these findings indicate domestic violence constitutes
a significant portion of homicides, aggravated assaults, and
batteries committed within the State; and
WHEREAS, present unemployment conditions are contributing to
the stresses of family life thereby compounding these problems; and
WHEREAS, "Puuhonua", The Family Crisis Shelter, Inc., located
in Hilo, serves the needs of those trapped in such violent family
situations by providing temporary emergency shelter and care for
residents of the Big Island.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports the need for these services on the Big
Island and urges the House Finance Committee to favorably consider
the Family Crisis Shelter's request for $69,524 in operating funds.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is instructed to remit copies of this Resolution to the following
members of the House Finance Committee; Chairman Ken Kiyabu,
Vice Chairman Richard A. Kawakami, Members Whitney T. Anderson,
Robert Bunda, Connie C. Chun, Mike Crozier, Reynaldo Graulty,
Virginia Isbell, Andrew Levin, Arnold Morgado, Bob Nakata,
Joseph M. Souki, Rod Tam, Norma Wong, Dwight L. Yoshimura and
Allegra Perhaes, Executive Director of "Puuhonua."
