HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 553 Draft 01 1980-1984y ~9 County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution 4JHEREAS, in 1981 the Hawaii County Council, acting on behalf of the people of the Big Island, passed unanimously Hawaii County Ordinance No. 665 prohibiting all nuclear materials from entry into the County; and a WHEREAS, the visits to Big Island of the nuclear submarine Robert E. Lee on May 29 to 31, 1982 and nuclear weapons capable ship U. S. S. Richard S. Edwards, DD950 on April 15 to 19, 1982, are contrary to the spirit of Hawaii County Ordinance 665; and WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council, while recognizing that Federal law supersedes County law, feels that the Navy could demonstrate its respect for the wishes of the people of the Big Island by complying with the spirit of Hawaii County Ordinance 665. N041, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it hereby respectfully requests the U. S. Navy no longer bring to the Big Island, vessels that are nuclear-powered or carry nuclear capable weapons systems. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be directed to remit a copy of this resolution to the Commandant of the U. S. Navy at Pearl Harbor together with a copy of the Hawaii County Ordinance 665. 1983.
