Removing Mr. Hoffmann as Vice-Chair takes away the only n o~n-aligned East-West influence on
this island. The best thing about having Mr. Hoffmann as vice-chair is his objective view of the
entire East-West battle and his ability to present a larger view of the island and its needs-

It is no secret that Kona and Hilo are at odds and have been for most of a century. Waimea has
always been the balancing force - when the east and west are at loggerheads Waimea can be the
mediator. vi V
With this rather hasty, if not surreptitious, resolution, it seems clear the east-west problem will be
resolved favoring the east and not the rest of the island, including Waimea and Kohala. This
does not bode well for the future of the island and the County.
I am very disappointed to see this kind of behavior, normally associated with New York,
Chicago and Louisiana, now arising on our island. Are the stakes, the ends, really so attractive
as to justify these means of attaining them?
There is a Hawaiian saying " A'ohe pan ka 'ike I ka halau ho'okahi." It translates to "not all
knowledge is taught at only one school." This action goes against that proverb and ensures that
one of the schools is to be shut out and disallowed from teaching.
I pray you will vote down Resolution 200-09 and retain the whole-island character of the
Council.
