HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0241.001 2008-2010 Aloha Members of Hawaii County Council I want to thank each of you for allowing me this precious time to share my vision with you, with hope that through your leadership we as a community will succeed in bringing awareness about this special segment of our community. As you can see from my presentation and website, my pilgrimage to raise monies for these children with special needs is not about me or us, it is about these children and bringing them into the 21St century. In my conversations with parents who have children with special needs they express the concerns they have for the future of their child. What will happen to them when the parents are gone? Will they be institutionalized with the county and state responsible for their welfare? Even in these hard economic times we must do all we are capable of to plan and implement programs through the non-profit organizations willing to establish programs and facilities where these children can grow and become Comm. No. . Ref. To: ft RS M~ Ref. Dote a ` productive citizens of our community. Given the chance they are capable of being successful. In conclusion, I have never undertaken a goal such as this. I have no experience in fundraising, and have dis covered that it is very difficult for me to ask for donations. However, what I do know is that after my experience with some of these children last summer, I felt the need to step up and do something for the future of these children. With your help and contacts we can build a network powerful enough to accomplish a successful program for the keiki with special needs and their parents. Respectfully yours, Angelina Lovato TENTATIVE ROUTE AND SCHEDULE Aloha, I'd like to invite the Mayor and all County Council members to walk with me when I enter your town or district. I'd like to inform you about an upcoming charitable walk for children with Special Needs beginning on June 8, 2009, the last day of school, from our campus grounds. I have shared my mission and plans with Mayor Kenoi and all of the council members as well as all trustees from Kamehameha Schools and Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The response has been positive with Mayor Kenoi and some of the council members joining me, time allowing, for a short distance as I enter their districts. The state of our economy continues to consume much of our elected leader's time; however some have indicated interest in supporting my mission by walking with me for a short distance. With pleasure I'd like to share with you how it came to be that I have chosen to walk around the "Big Island" to raise monies for this very special population of children. Monies raised will be used to provide financial assistance to families who cannot afford extracurricular activities that provide physical and mental enhancements for these children. Most importantly though, I'd like to raise awareness among our elected leaders, educational institutions, community leaders, family and friends regarding the future of children with Special Needs in Hawaii. What happens after high school graduation? What have we done as a community to provide a solid future for this often times ignored population? Last summer I taught summer school at Konawaena Elementary School. This session was geared towards children with Special Needs. I met and worked with a beautiful soul, Princess Whalen (Kuulei). I had never worked with Special Needs children before so, this summer school experience really opened my eyes to the needs that these special children and, their parents so desperately have. Their needs include a plan for their future, a plan that would include a facility that could provide an environment where these young people could live independently and continue to learn, grow and become the best that they can be. As, 1 became more acquainted with families who have children with Special Needs, I learned more about the concerns that these families have for the future of their children. "What will happen to our children after we are gone?" "What does the future hold for my child?" Many of these children have Hawaiian blood but they will never be able to test high enough to attend Kamehameha Schools. Bernice Pauahi Bishop would want these children to excel within and beyond their present capacity. A secure haven of learning and advancement must also be extended to this special population of children. It is very important that the concerns and the future of these children be addressed. These children with Special Needs should be able to graduate from high school and continue on a path of higher learning. They should be able to live independently with supervision and aloha. Through Kuulei, I realized that more needs to be done for the future of Native Hawaiian Special Needs children, as well as the many cultures that embody this special group, after all, these are Hawaii's children. I am asking for your support as I walk around the Big Island for these children and their parents. Your donations will help us provide a variety of activities for children with special needs on the Big Island and help us achieve our dream of a facility that will provide an environment where these young people could live independently and continue to learn, grow, and become part of our community. Mahalo nui loa, Angelina Lovato Chairperson 81-943 Makahiki Lane Captain Cook, HI 96704 323-8330 Talk Story #5 I am feeling great, working out 5 to 6 days per week, staying focused on the upcoming event. It will be here soon and my excitement is becoming more intense. I must admit that there are days that I feel overwhelmed by all that is happening. My workouts really help to keep my concentration on details that must be accomplished by certain deadlines. Getting the word out is a challenge. There are so many people to contact, make appointments with the media-- radio, television and newspapers. I just want to walk but..... I know that for my mission to be successful I must get the word out in order to receive donations! Our website donations are a bit slow, I would like to see more support and I know it will happen. On the flip side we have had some wonderful support since my last Talk Story, let me tell you about it: • State Senator Josh Green has acknowledged my invitation and will join me somewhere along my journey. • Bert and Joanne Wong have sponsored a motor home for one week, this is really going to make my journey more comfortable, mahalo Bert and Joanne. • Francis Kuailani has invited me to speak to the Rotary Club at Teshimas Restaurant in Kainaliu, the date to be set. • KHBC 92.7 FM radio had me as a guest on March 25, 2009, 1 would like to thank Myna Bird for the opportunity share my story. All of the feedback comments were positive. • The continued support from my school principal Claire Yoshida and the staff Cynthia, Bev and Karen, is the best they are wonderful people who have been so supportive. • We designed and ordered a Special Needs Kids banner for the motor home and a couple of "Caution Walker Ahead" signs to place on the highway sholder warning motorists as a safety measure. Jim & Tina Mason and Mildred Valdez, all from New Mexico donated the banner and signs. Alvin's Signs is contracted to supply the signs and he also provided a discount. Mahalo to all of you. My walk is estimated to take 2 weeks, so we need a sponsor for the 2nd week for the motor home. My goal amount for monies raised is still $150,000. The population on the Big Island is 170,000 plus and if we receive just $1.00 per person we will surpass our goal. The "Donate" page on the website shows $5000 as our goal, this is for phase 1, $15,000 for phase 2 and the ultimate goal of $150,000. We want to see the volcano erupt 3 times! Finally, I have a special request, any "body doubles" out there?
