RESOLUTION NO. 79~ 83
WHEREAS, the First Annual Kupuna Hula Festival held in Keauhou,
Kona, on November 17-19, 1983., was deemed a tremendous success by
virtue of the number of dancers and spectators who experienced this
novel hula competition, involving senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, under the initiative and direction of the Festival
Coordinator, Kumu Hula George Naope, over five hundred people regis-
tered with the Department of Parks and Recreation Elderly Activities
Program in the County of Hawaii and its counterparts statewide and
in the U. S. mainland participated in the festival; and
WHEREAS, this well received event was co-sponsored by the Hawaii
County Elderly Activities Division, George Naope's Kona Gardens
School of Hawaiian Arts, Aloha Airlines and Mid-Pacific Airlines
with the intentions of establishing the Big Island as the hula capi-
tal of the world, to promote Hawaii County as a tourist attraction
and to perpetuate Hawaiiana and its culture; and
WHEREAS, the successful culmination of the two-day affair
resulted in the following winners:
Ka Nani 'O Hilo, the Kane Group; Na Kupuna 'O Koolau
of Kaneohe, both the Wahine Group and the Mixed Group;
Mr. Kamuela Ogitani, the Solo-Tutu Kane; and Mrs. Ada
Gonsalves, the Solo-Tutu Wahine.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it congratulates the participants and sponsors
of the First Annual Kupuna Hula Festival for its maiden success
and wishes continued good fortune in all future festivals.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii is instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution
to Na Kupuna 'O Koolau, Ka Nani 'O Hilo, Mr. Kamuela Ogitani,
Mrs. Ada Gonsalves, the Hawaii County Elderly Activities
Division, George Naope's Kona Gardens School of Hawaiian Arts,
Aloha Airlines and Mid-Pacific Airlines along with its
commendations for a job well done.
