RESD_UTION NO 79~ 83
dti'HFREAS, the Chiversity of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan Wahines won their third
consecutive I~lational Association of Intereolleyiate Athletics (NP,IA) women's
volleyball championsnip by whipping St. Mary's College of Moraga, California,
both in the semi-final and championship games on hbvember 19, 1983, at
Rock Hill, South Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the Wahines, in compiling an impressive X5-4 record againsi
collegiate competition, extended their string to 19 straight NAIA tournament
matches sinr:e 1981, and also, extended their athletic mastery over NATA
competition to 57 straight yarnes; and
WHET2EA5, in addition to the Team's success, the Vulcan Wahines also won
the tbllowing prestigious individual awards: Alofa Tagataese, tournament Nast
Valuable Player and First Team; Cyndy Kapuniai and Nalani Spencer, both Firsi
Team; and Marve Keama, Second 'Team; and
WHEREAS, for the third straight year, Vulcan Head Coate Sharon Peterson
was named as the IJAIA Coach of the Year, an award which exemplifies her
phenomenal accomplishment of five National Championships in six seasons.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED LY TtiE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII tJ~at
it extends its warmest congratulations to the UH-Hi 1o Vulcan Women's
Volleyball Team for winning its third consecutive t~tional Championship, and
wisnes its players and staff continued success in coming seasons.
EE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii remit copies
of this Resolution to: Alofa Tagataese, t~ lani Spencer, Marve Keama, Kathy
Hong, Lotu Sau Talam~oa, Tara 8ourdukofsky, Lori Ching, Celyn Aradanas, Peke
Malae, Sheryl Scott, Cathy V~itworth, Cyndy 1<apuniai, and Jay Downey; Coach
Sharon Peterson; Assistant Coach Rio`rard Tioyangco; Athletic Drainer Linda
Rowan; Attrletic Director Joey Estrella and Chancellor Stephen Mitchell.
