RESOLUTION NO. `7SO $.3
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack Markey, born Jacob Leonard Markey in Latvia in
1905, came to the United States when a lad of five; and
WHEREAS, Jack Markey has had a rich background of work ranging
from his early days as a copy boy and sports writer at the Bronx
Home News in New York, as road manager of the Hall Johnson Choir for
17 years, and later as road manager for the Les Hite Orchestra of
"big band" fame and as a supervisor in a nuts and bolts factory in
Los Angeles; and
WHEREAS, in August 1961, Jack Markey and his wife, the late
Dr. Beatrice Markey, a widely respected professor of political
science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, adopted Hilo as their
home and gave much of their insight, uniqueness and special love to
this community; and
WHEREAS, Jack Markey has earned a well-deserved reputation as a
staunchly independent figure and is an inspiration to many Big
Islanders with his determined spirit in spite of his visual and
other handicaps; and
WHEREAS, Jack Markey has been a respected member of the Big
Island community for 22 years, working on behalf of the Hawaii
Concert Society and the Hawaii Mental Heath Association; and
WHEREAS, Jack Markey has become a noted figure in radio
advertising during his two decades of work in behalf of KIPA and
KHLO; and
WHEREAS, Jack Markey has served as a leader of the Big Island
Press Club since its inception in 1967 by serving on its board of
directors, being the longtime chairman of its membership committee
and serving numerous times on its scholarship selection committee;
and
WHEREAS, Jack Markey has performed in 14 successive Imu
productions, portraying important figures from governors to mayors
to councilmembers, plus many other roles with equal aplomb, and
delighted most of his "victims" in the process; and
WHEREAS, Jack Markey's ongoing love of life, his effervescent
sense of humor, his persistent vigor and his steady contribution to
the Big Island community deserves recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it joins with the many others in extending
congratulations and thanks to Mr. Jack Markey on the occasion of his
testimonial dinner, "Ad-Libbing With Jack Markey", on Sunday,
November 13, 1983, at the Naniloa Surf Hotel.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to transmit a true copy of this Resolution to Jack Markey
along with the County Council's best wishes.
