County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, Mauna Kea's climate, high elevation, and isolated
location are unique attributes which furnishes the most superior
site for optical astronomy; and
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy
recognizes Mauna Kea's astronomical attributes and has developed a
plan to accommodate scientific development as well as preserve the
historical and recreational characteristics; and
WHEREAS, the Mauna Kea Science Reserve has developed into an
international science facility serving many countries with the
University of Hawaii telescope, the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope,
the NASA's infrared telescope, and the United Kingdom infrared
telescope; and
WHEREAS, the science facility has brought substantial economic
benefits to the State and the County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it hereby recognizes the Mauna Kea Science Reserve and
its attendant astronomical research programs as a viable economic
unit in the County of 'Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Institute of Astronomy of the
University of Hawaii be commended for their exemplary leadership in
assuring the orderly development of one of Hawaii's most precious
resources.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of
transmit copies of this Resolution to the
Ariyoshi, Governor of the State of Hawaii;
President of the University of Hawaii; Mr.
Chairman of the Board of Regents and Dr. Dona
Astronomy.
