Resolution
WHEREAS, the Hilo Civic Auditorium is recognized as the major
arena for athletic events in the City of Hilo; and
WHEREAS, Ung Soy "Beans" Afook and Richard "Pablo" Chinen are
two outstanding sports personalities who have established living
legends in their respective specialties; and
WHEREAS, Ung Soy "Beans" Afook is remembered for his outstanding
achievements as coach of the Hilo High Viking Basketball program,
amassing an unequalled thirteen consecutive territorial
championships; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Pablo" Chinen's legacy can be found in his
unselfish dedication toward the advancement of athletics as a
champion boxer, coach, manager and promoter; and
WHEREAS, more important, both gentlemen have left their
indelible impressions upon those who were fortunate to have had the
associations with them.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in recognition of the outstanding contributions by both
Ung Soy "Beans" Afook and Richard "Pablo" Chinen, it hereby endorses
the renaming of the Hilo Civic Auditorium to the Afook-Chinen Civic
Auditorium.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit true copies of this Resolution to the Honorable Herbert T.
Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii; Mr. Milton Hakoda,
Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation; Mr. Ung Soy
"Beans" Afook and Mr. Richard "Pablo" Chinen.
