RESOLUTION NO. ~Jrg Sa3
WHEREAS, Jim Wilson, General Manager of the Hawaii
Tribune-Herald, announced that the Hawaii Tribune-Herald will be
celebrating their 60th anniversary with a special commemorative
edition on Sunday, October 23, 1983; and
WHEREAS, the history of the newspaper begins with the founding
of the old Hilo Tribune in 1895, the Hawaii Herald in 1896, and the
Hawaii Post in 1905; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Herald merged with the Hawaii Post to become
the Hawaii Herald Post, then in 1923 the Hilo Tribune merged with
the Hawaii Herald Post to become the Hilo Tribune-Herald; and
WHEREAS, after purchasing the paper in 1964 and naming it the
Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Donald W. Reynolds, President of the Donrey
Media Group, adopted its creed that it would continue to be, "a
newspaper devoted to the welfare, progress and prosperity of Hilo
and the Island of Hawaii"; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald has lived up to the
sentiments of that creed over the years in the highest tradition of
journalism; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald has always been generous to
the people of the County of Hawaii by donating free space in their
paper, printing the weekly meeting notices and agenda of the County
Council and the various Committee meetings, and informing the public
of what is happening at the local government level.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it hereby bestows the official accolade of this body and
requests all residents of the City of Hilo and the Island of Hawaii
to join the County Council in recognizing the outstanding service
the Hawaii Tribune-Herald has rendered to the people of the Island
of Hawaii over the past 60 years, and that we affirm our continued
support and best wishes for the future of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
send a true copy of this resolution to Mr. Jim Wilson, General
Manager of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
