HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 759 Draft 01 1980-1984-~ ~ o 0 County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, the papaya industry provides employment directly and indirectly for about 3% of the total workforce in the County of Hawaii, and currently, the unemployment rate is at 9.8%; and WHEREAS, the Hawaii papaya growers have contributed over $1 million over the past decade under Federal Marketing Order No. 928 for market development programs in the United States; and WHEREAS, if the Philippines are allowed to export papaya into the U.S. market, Hawaii would be severely crippled economically because the current U.S. demand is still not great enough to absorb Hawaii's total production. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE_ COUNTY OF HAWAII that it humbly requests that the U.S. Department of Agriculture deny the Philippines from importing papaya into the United States because of the catastrophic effects to the Big Island of Hawaii. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County send copies of this Resolution to the Congressional Delegation in Washington, the Honorable Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Spark M. Matsunaga, and the Honorable Representatives Daniel K. Akaka and Cecil Heftel; Mr. John Block, Secretary of Agriculture, U. S. Department of Agriculture; Mr. Harvey Ford, Deputy Administrator, Plant Protection and Quarantine Division; Governor George Ariyoshi; Representative Yoshito Takamine, Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture; and Mr. Robert Souza, Papaya Administrative Committee.
