RESOLUTION NO. X62 83
WHEREAS, a longtime and respected religious leader of the Big
Island, Dwight Nakamura., was recently named as the statewide Bishop
of the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions; and
WHEREAS, after almost three decades on this island, including
nineteen years as the minister of the Hilo Meishoin, Bishop Nakamura
has effectively promoted the. teachings of Buddhism and helped
organize and nuture many youth groups; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure here, Bishop Nakamura has served as a
campus minister at the University of Hawaii-Hilo, was one of the
organizers of the Interfaith Counseling Service, the Mental Health
Association, and the Big Island Peace Coordinating Committee; and
WHEREAS, besides Bishop Nakamura's involvement in his religious
calling, he also served in other community organizations such as the
Boy Scouts of America, the Big Island Council on Alcoholism, the
Hawaii Island United Way, the Hawaii Island Japanese Community
Association, the Japanese Immigrant Museum and the Lion's Clubs; and
WHEREAS, his following is attested to by his 27 consecutive
years of broadcasting the well over 1,700 15-minute presentations of
"Shuyo Koza Program", a Japanese lecture session on Buddhism.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to Bishop Dwight Nakamura
upon his deserved selection as the statewide Bishop of the Hawaii
Council of Jodo Missions.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to
Bishop Dwight Nakamura along with the Council's best wishes to this
distinguished religious leader in his new assignment.
