County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, Kawaihae Road, that 9 mile section of State Route 19
which runs between Waimea town and the port facilities at Kawaihae
Harbor, is critically in need of upgrading; and
WHEREAS, this stretch of highway has long been one of the most
hazardous roadways in Hawaii County and thereby has been the scene
of many traffic accidents with loss of life and property; artd
WHEREAS, this major artery in South Kohala lacks sufficient
shoulders, guard rails, escape ramps and truck lanes in Hawaii
County's fastest growing district is urgently in need of
replacement; and
WHEREAS, at the present rate of upgrading by the State
Department of Transportation will be beyond 1990 before the new
Kawaihae Road will be completed; and
WHEREAS, the State Department of Transportation has set aside a
sum of $500,000 under the Federal Hazard Elimination Program to
accelerate the upgrading of this roadway.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it wholeheartedly supports this action to expedite
elimination of this hazardous condition in our community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
directed to send copies of this Resolution to Governor George R.
Ariyoshi, State Department of Transportation Director Dr. Ryokichi
Higashionna, Hawaii's Congressional Delegation and the South Kohala
Traffic Safety Committee.
