HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 748 Draft 01 1980-1984~~~ -r---~~ O a County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, Wai'aka Bridge, located at the junction of State routes 19 and 250 in the district of South Kohala, has the worst record of accidents of any tenth of a mile segment on the entire Kawaihae Road; and WHEREAS, this bridge, which was built in 1932, has out-lived the traffic density and performance standards of vehicles of that era; and WHEREAS, this bridge presents a hazard due to its bad alignment at the intersection of two well-traveled thoroughfares in Hawaii County's fastest growing district and therefore presents ever-increasing hazards to vehicular traffic; and WHEREAS, this intersection is situated on the access route to Kawaihae Harbor where large truck-trailer traffic is predominant, further exposing hazards to the driving public. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it urges the State Department of Transportation to expeditiously determine the eligibility of Wai'aka Bridge for replacement under the Federal Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Program so that action may proceed to eliminate this hazardous condition in our community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to Governor George Ariyoshi, State Department of Transportation Director Dr. Ryokichi Higashionna, Hawaii's Congressional Delegation and the South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee.
