RESOLUTION NO. '739 C33
WHEREAS, during the past school year, over 6,000 students on the
Big Island were transported to and from school each day in over 160
school buses; and
WHEREAS, the safe transportation of Hawaii's school children is
a matter of concern for all citizens of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the excellent safety record compiled by Hawaii's school
bus drivers gives credence to the vigorous driver-student
educational programs conducted by the Hawaii State School Bus
Association; and
WHEREAS, enforcement of proper bus maintenance is fostered by
the semi-annual rigid inspection by government agencies; and
WHEREAS, the many bus drivers, school personnel, contractors,
student transportation officers, DOT motor vehicle inspectors,
police and other citizens have worked diligently to improve this
outstanding record.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its commendation to all the people who are
responsible in bringing about this enviable record in providing safe
school transportation to the children in Hawaii and further
expresses its gratitude to the many diligent bus drivers who have
made this excellent record possible.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to remit a copy of this resolution to William Buchanan,
President, Hawaii State School Bus Association (HSSBA); John Saplan,
Treasurer, HSSBA; Kiyoto Mizuba, District Superintendent, DOE;
Charles Kaluai, Motor Vehicle Inspector; Police Chief Guy Paul;
Kaoru Higaki, District Superintendent, DAGS; Tsuneo Takemoto, East
Hawaii Student Transportation Officer and to Sanford Higashi, west
Hawaii Student Transportation Officer.
