WHEREAS, Ung Soy "Beans" Afook, a living legend on the
Big Island as a basketball coach for Hilo High School, devoted
his life to athletics, education and the improvement of the
youth of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, as coach of the Hilo High Viking basketball team,
he led his players to thirteen territorial championship meets
winning ten championships, a record that is unprecedented and
unequalled; and
WHEREAS,.,out of 208 games played, Coach Afook's Hilo
High School Vikings won 193 and lost only 15, for an impressive
winning percentage of .928.
WHEREAS, during his illustrious career he won 45 straight
games between 1935 and 1937, and surpassed that feat between
1938 and 1944 with an unbroken streak of 53 victories; and
WHEREAS, as a coach, he inspired his players to greatness,
and as an outstanding teacher and counselor, he instilled a
sense of pride and worth in all the students he came in contact
with; and
WHEREAS, his achievements and exemplary life were honored
in a resolution (H .R. 438) passed by the State House of Represen-
tatives and again by a resolution passed by the State Senate
(S.R. 264) in 1978; and
WHEREAS, he was elected into the Hawaii Sports Hall of
Fame and Museum in 1979, a prestigious honor which recognized
his performance, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contri-
bution to sports.
NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Resolved By The Council of The County
of Hawaii that in recognition of the outstanding contributions
U.S. "Beans" Afook has made to sports, and to the youth of our
community, it hereby endorses the proposal that the Hilo Civic
Auditorium be renamed the UNG SOY "BEANS" AFOOK Auditorium to
honor Hawaii's greatest basketball coach.

Be It Further Resolved that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit true copies of this resolution to Mayor Herbert 1!4atayoshi,
and Milton Hakoda, Director of Parks and Recreation.
