HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 726 Draft 01 1980-1984t ~~ 0 0 County of Hawaii-State of Hawaii Resolution No. 726 83 WHEREAS, Richard "Pablo" Chinen devoted his entire life to athletics,`both as a champion boxer and as a coach, manager, and promoter of sporting activities on our Island; and WHEREAS, as an amateur boxer, he won the title of Flyweight Champion of the Big Island, only to have a promising boxing career interrupted by World War II; and WHEREAS, he was awarded the prestigious Croix de Guerre medal by the French Government for his gallant service with the U.S. Armed Forces in Europe; and WHEREAS, upon his return to the islands, his love of boxing led him to serve as trainer and coach of such talented athletes as world flyweight champion Yoshio Shirai of Japan, and distinguished himself as an amateur and professional referee in the State; and WHEREAS, he founded the Pony-Colt baseball program in the State of Hawaii, and who, as State commissioner, often supported the teams with his own funds to afford the youth of our Islands the opportunity to participate in mainland tournaments; and WHEREAS, upon returning to Hilo, he joined the County's Parks and Recreation Department, continued to promote boxing, and brought the Hawaii team to the National AAU finals, and WHEREAS, he was appointed Public Relations Director of the Pacific Coast Baseball League Hawaii Islanders and promoted them throughout the State and the West Coast; and WHEREAS, he was honored by being named the Hawaii Sportsman Of the Year in 1959 joining the company of Duke Kahanamoku, Francis I. Brown, Chinn Ho and other great names in sports history, .~ 0 0 NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Resolved By the Council of the County of Hawaii that, in recognition of the many contributions Richard "Pablo" Chinen has made to sports and to the youth of the Big Island, it hereby endorses the proposal that the Hilo Armory be renamed the Richard "Pablo" Chinen Armory to honor this outstanding citizen and sportsman. Be It Further Resolved that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii remit true copies of this resolution to Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi and Milton Hakoda, Director of Parks and Recreation.
