RESOLUTION N0. '7J"l6 ~~
WHEREAS, Male Pohaku, a former rest station with very modest
accommodations at the 9,200-foot elevation of Mauna Kea, has been
refurbished into an ultra-modern mid-level support facility for
housing and feeding up to 57 people who work at the observatories
atop Mauna Kea; and
4vHEREAS, the five building complex, built at a cost of
$7 million as a cooperative venture by France, Canada, Great Britain
and the United States, was formally dedicated on August 11, 19fl3; and
WHEREAS, the opening is a giant step toward developing the
Big Island as a preferred site far astronomical operations, as
evidenced by other nations which have since expressed interest in
also using Mauna Kea for astronomical observations; and
WHEREAS, Ur. John Jefferies, Director of the Institute for
Astronomy at the University of Hawaii, played an instrumental role
in helping the Big Island to become a choice world site for
astronomical observations.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it congratulates Or. John Jefferies for his tremendous
commitment and leadership in upgrading Hale Pohaku into a
first-class support facility and developing Mauna Kea here on the
Big Island as a major location for astronomy study.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit a true copy of this Resolution to Dr. John Jefferies,
Director, Institute for Astronomy; Dr. Terry Lee, Offioer In
Charge, United Kingdom Infrared Telescope; Dr. Rene Racine,
Director, Canada-France Telescope Corp.; Dr. William Brunk, NASA
Headquarters, 4lashington, U. C.; and Cr. Richard Capps of the
Institute for Astronomy.
