County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii.
Resolution
WHEREAS, the.Council of the County of Hawaii believes that the
recently discovered Puna Cave Complex, heretofore variously
identified as Kapokohelele, Kapoulakina'u, and Peleluna, represents
a significant archaeological find; and
WHEREAS, the Council is concerned about the disposition,
planning and future actions relating to the Puna Cave Complex; and
WHEREAS, the County Council desires that an intensive study be
made of the Puna Cave Complex, that the historical significance of
this Complex be established, and that data be retrieved; and
WHEREAS, the Council acknowledges and concurrs with the opinions
and strong feelings of the Hawaiian people in dealings with their
historical, religious, and traditional aspects of their culture; and
WHEREAS, the County Council recognizes that the Office of
Hawaiian Affairs has broad mandated powers and authority to act on
behalf of the Hawaiian people.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it urges the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to establish and
maintain a position of leadership in actions concerning the Puna
Cave Complex and calls for an authoritative and irrefutable
assessment of the Complex while considering the strong feelings and
opinions of the Hawaiian community in their historical, traditional
religious aspects, and additions to modern and scientific studies.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit copies of this Resolution to Joseph Kealoha, Chairman of the
Board of Trustees, Office of Hawaiian Affairs; Susumu Ono,
Director/Chairman, Department of Land & Natural Resources;
Mayor Herbert Matayoshi; Ralph Nagata, Director, Historic Sites
Division, Department of Land & Natural Resources; Peter Hauanio,
President, Puna Hui Ohana, West Hawaii Island Trustee Advisory
Council, and Charles Rose, Interim Chairman, East Hawaii Island
Trustee Advisory Council.
