Resolution
WHEREAS, the Wailoa River Channel is once again experiencing
problems with the shoaling of sediment at the river's entrance,
restricting the safe movement of the many vessels that have to use
this area; and
WHEREAS, this problem began after the heavy storm. in 1980, and
was supposed to have been corrected in a joint dredging project
conducted by the State and County in 1982; and
WHEREAS, should this hazard be allowed to continue, it will
adversely affect not only the safety of all boating interests but
more importantly, the economic well being of our fishing industry,
in the event of a tsunami which would trap and destroy all boats in
the harbor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
HAWAII that it requests the U. S. Army
evaluate, plan and implement permanent
correct the shoaling problem of the Wailoa
the safety and well being of our fishing
users of the harbor.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to
Colonel Alfred J. Thiede of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers;
Ryokichi Higashionna, Director, State Department of Transportation,
and Adam Vincent, District Manager, Hawaii District Office, DOT.
