WHEREAS, in 1958, Peter Fithian founded the Hawaiian
International Billfish Tournament, {HIBT), which on August
8-12, 1983, will celebrate its Silver Anniversary commensurate with
the 25th annual HIBT; and
WHEREAS, the pioneering efforts of Peter Fithian and a small
group of sportsminded
people from Kona and throughaut the state have
nurtured the FII67 into a sporting extravaganza, with international `~
prominence; and
4vHEREAS, this renowned fishing tournament with its well planned
ceremonies, parades, along with the exciting fishing competition
will attract an estimated 10,000 spectators to the Kona area; and
WHEREAS, the partieipatian of 47 teams from 19 foreign countries
will be vying for the prestigious honors and awards during what is
expected to be one of the largest and most successful recreational
events. in the State of Hawaii.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its gratitude to the officers and members of
the Hawaiian International Billfish Association, the Kona Coast
Chamber of Commerce and the hundreds of volunteers, for their
dedicated efforts in making this annual tournament a recreational,
social and economic event worthy of commendation and recognition.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to
Peter S. Fithian, Chairman of the Board of Governors, of the
Hawaiian International Billfish Association, the Board members from
the Biq Island, namely, Gordon L. Bartsch; Stanley I. Hara;
Hank Hart; Ken Michael, Philip Parker, Alton C. Penrose,
Lewis T. Sterry, and Jim Nottage, President of the Kona Coast
Chamber of Commerce.
Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 3rd day of August, 1983.
