Resolution
WHEREAS, on May 8, 1984, Senator Daniel K. Inouye and
Representative Daniel K. Akaka introduced legislation seeking
Federal consent to amend the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act enacted
by the State of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, prior to the changes
applicants of the Hawaiian Homes

homestead land for 99 years; and
made by the State Legislature, the
Homesteads must have had a blood
Hawaiian in order to lease the
WHEREAS, the State Legislature in 1982 changed the Act so that
the spouse or children having a minimum of 25 percent Hawaiian
ancestry may continue to lease the homestead land for the duration
of the 99 years after the death of the original lessee; and
WHEREAS, a Federal-State Task Force on the Hawaiian Homes
Commission, composed of representatives of the Hawaiian community
and U. S. Department of Interior, after a careful examination of the
matter, has also recommended pursuing federal consent to these
amendments.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports, amending the State law on the Hawaiian
Homes Commission Act, to allow- the spouse or children of the
Hawaiian Homesteader who has at least 25 percent Hawaiian ancestry
to continue to lease the homestead land upon the death of the
original lessee and requests approval by the Congress of the United
States to amend the Act.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to send copies of this resolution to U. S. Senator
Daniel K. Inouye, U. S. Senator Spark Matsunaga, U. S.
Representative Daniel K. Akaka, U. S. Representative Cecil Heftel,
and to Chairperson Georgiana Padeken of the Hawaiian Homes
Commission.
