RESOLUTION No. g~~ 8~
WHEREAS, the Annual Merrie tAOnarch Festival has clearly established a
reputation of being the finest cultural event in the State of Hawaii, and it
continues to reach new horizons in its attractiveness and interest with each
succeeding year; and
Wf1EREF6, in the 21st Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, which was held from
AprilL2 -L8 in Hilo, the hula competition was telecast "live" from the Edith
Kanakaole Multi-purpose Stadiurn by KITV throughout the 50th State for the
first time; and
WHEREAS, the City of Hilo can be extremely proud of Dorothy "fiottie"
Thompson, Chairwoman of the Merrie Monarch festival since 1968, for her
selfless dedication toward developing this annual Statewide hula championship
into the prestigious event that it is today, and thus, perpetuating the best
of Hawaiiana in music and dance in honor of King David La'amea Kalakaua.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE I7 RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
it gives its warnrest expression of love and aloha tc Dorothy "Dottie" Thompson
for coordinating anotii2r successful Pierrie Monarch Festival -- a job "well
done."
BE IT FIIRTHER kESOLVED that Mrs. Thompson continue her enthusiasm and
professional attitude for making each successive Festival even better than
previous Festivals.
BE IT FURT(1ER RESOLVED that the County Clerk transmit copies to the
Festival Chairman Cottie Thompson and KITV for televising the 21st Merrie
Monarch Festival "live" to the people of flae;aii.
