RESOLUTION NO. Ss~ '8~-
WHEREAS, 37 members of the 200 member Waiakea Intermediate
School Ukulele Band will be leaving for Japan on Wednesday,
March 21, 1984 for a 10 day goodwill tour accompanied by Principal
Donna Saiki, Bandmasters George Camarillo Sr., George Camarillo Jr.,
seven chaperons and ten band boosters; and
WHEREAS, the group will be touring different parts of Japan upon
their arrival, culminating their visit with a concert performance in
Tokyo before returning home; and
WHEREAS, the Waiakea Intermediate School Ukulele Band was first
organized under bandmaster George Camarillo Sr. fourteen years ago,
with three objectives: learn to play the ukulele, study and promote
the Hawaiian culture, and expand educational experiences by
traveling and performing at concerts; and
WHEREAS, research done by the Bishop Museum in Honolulu found
that the Waiakea Inermediate School Ukulele Band is not only the
largest in the State of Hawaii, but in the whole world; and
WHEREAS, the band took their Hawaiian musical instruments
(ukulele) and performed at such far away places as: Denver,
Tijuana, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, various
schools on Kauai, Oahu, and Maui, the Ilikai Hotel, Ala Moana
Shopping Center, the Don Robbs T. V. Show, Filipino Fiesta T. V.
Show, the opening of the Legislature and recently at the Leeward
Community Festival; and
WHEREAS, the band produced a record album in 1981 and another
album this year, which will be sold as part of the annual fund
raising project sponsored by the Waiakea Band Booster Club, who have
been underwriting the band's travel expenses and costs of repair and
maintenance of the instruments.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to the Waiakea
Intermediate School Ukulele Band and to the Waiakea Band Booster
Club members who underwrote the cost of the goodwill tour to Japan,
bringing Hawaiian folklore in music and friendship to the Japanese
people and wishes all of them bon-voyage and success on their
goodwill tour.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
hereby instructed to remit a true copy of this resolution to
President Jimmy Miyagi of the Waiakea 'Band Booster Club, Band
Director George Camarillo Sr. and to Principal Donna Saiki.
