WHEREAS, Arthur B. Chun, a community activist who was an
outspoken and articulate advocate of Hawaiian rights recently passed
away; and
WHEREAS, Arthur Chun, a Kona businessman, was Hawaii's first
army volunteer for active duty after the Pearl Harbor attack and
during his military career saw action in Guadalcanal, Bougainville,
and the Korean War and was retired with honors with a rank of
colonel; and
WHEREAS, for two decades since his retirement from the Army in
December, 1961, Col. Chun devoted much of his time to community
matters which included the efforts to establish the Honokohau-Kaloko
area as a national historic site, where as chairman of a special
study commission, he conducted important public hearings throughout
the state and also coordinated the congressional hearings on this
vital Hawaiian issue, and led the promotion of Hawaiian cultural
activities at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau; and
WHEREAS, Col. Chun's talents and personality will be missed by
the people in Kona, especially the Hawaiian community whom he ably
represented in the many concerns that came before them.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it acknowledges the noteworthy contributions of Col.
Arthur B. Chun and commensurately extends its deepest sympathy and
condolences to his family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to his daughters
Kalik'ookalani Chun Seymour and Ihilani Staton.
