County of Hawaii-State of Hawaii
Resolution No. ~
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii in 1971, based on
sentiments from members of our Portuguese community, entertained a
proposal for the initiation of a sister city relationship with
Portugal; and
WHEREAS, an initial commitment was made in 1972 that should the
County of Hawaii consider establishing any sister city association
either Portugal or Puerto Rico be accorded a high priority; and
WHEREAS, a sister city relationship with the Island of
San Miguel, Portugal is now deserving of consideration because the
Portuguese population is comparable in size with the other major
nationalities, namely, the Japanese, the Filipinos and the Chinese,
and those nationalities currently have sister city relationships
with the County of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, in 1981, a new vigor and Portuguese awareness surfaced
with the establishment of the Portuguese Genealogical Society of
Hawaii, an organization which researched and documented the written
and oral history of the Portuguese people of Hawaii and
subsequently, served as the catalyst for creating the Hawaii Island
Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in January, 1982; and
WHEREAS, in addition to cultural exchanges San Miguel shall also
be useful to Hawaii in the field of geothermal energy development
because it has two plants, one ready to go on line and the other
about 50 percent complete.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in light of the recent activation of Portuguese cultural
awareness and the previous Council commitment, the Council endorses
a proposal for the establishment of a sister city relationship with
San Miguel, Portugal.
