County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Student Science Training Program, conducted
on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, provides
scientifically gifted high school students with an extraordinary
opportunity for learning the theories and applications of calculus
and physics; and
WHEREAS, the seven-week residential summer program provides
students with an educational environment conducive to intensive
scientific study; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Student Science Training Program was funded
by a National Science Foundation grant during the summers of
1979-1981, but Federal budgetary cuts have resulted in the
termination of National Science Foundation funding; and
WHEREAS, the 1982-1983 summer programs received financial
support from the families of program participants and from others in
the community who have come to recognize the significant benefits of
the program toward students' academic and social achievements.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports the objective of the Hawaii Student Science
Training Program in providing a unique educational experience for
gifted math and science high school students and wishes the program
continued success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
directed to transmit copies of this resolution to Dr. Charles M.
Fullerton, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Hawaii
at Hilo, and Professor Suk R. Hwang, Director, Hawaii Student
Science Training Program.
