County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, the Kalapana Community Organization expressed concern
about the County of Hawaii's use of herbicides to control weeds
alongside the roads at the Kalapana area and along the lower Puna
Coast road; and
WHEREAS, the herbicide spray intended to destroy weeds alongside
the roads has contaminated drinking waters and affected cultivation
of fruits and vegetables, with the possibility of causing illness,
after an extended consumption of these contaminated edibles; and
WHEREAS, the recent motto "BEAUTIFY HAWAII COUNTY" promoted by
the County administration and the County Council to beautify the Big
Island is consistent in keeping the roadsides green over abandoned
dried weeds and grasses.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that the County Department of Public Works `be directed to
develop other means to control or eradicate obnoxious weeds and
grasses alongside county roads.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
send a copy of this resolution to Mayor Herbert Matayoshi and to
Chief Engineer Ed Harada.
Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this day of 1984.
