Re: Resolution 849 -.~ .- 0 c~ ~-+~ County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, the Kalapana Community Organization expressed concern about the County of Hawaii's use of herbicides to control weeds alongside the roads at the Kalapana area and along the lower Puna Coast road; and WHEREAS, the herbicide spray intended to destroy weeds alongside the roads has contaminated drinking waters and affected cultivation of fruits and vegetables, with the possibility of causing illness, after an extended consumption of these contaminated edibles; and WHEREAS, the recent motto "BEAUTIFY HAWAII COUNTY" promoted by the County administration and the County Council to beautify the Big Island is consistent in keeping the roadsides green over abandoned dried weeds and grasses. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the County Department of Public Works `be directed to develop other means to control or eradicate obnoxious weeds and grasses alongside county roads. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii send a copy of this resolution to Mayor Herbert Matayoshi and to Chief Engineer Ed Harada. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this day of 1984.
