RESOLUTION NO. ~43..84-
WHEREAS, Colonel L. W. Bryan, a kama'aina resident of the Big
Island and noted pioneer in the field of forestry, passed away on
January 28, 1984; and
WHEREAS, christened Leicester Winthrop Bryan, he was a retired
Colonel of the U. S. Army, also had a notable forty-year career as
the Chief Forester of the County of Hawaii and has been credited
with supervising the planting of over ten million trees, including
the redwoods of Mauna Kea and the eucalyptus groves that are
prominent around the island; and
WHEREAS, Col. Bryan's well known endeavors to improve the flora
of Hawaii, covered the preservation of many endangered native
plants, the introduction of hundreds of exotic plant species,
including the Vanda Joaquin Orchid which today is our island's
leading floral export; and
WHEREAS, in 1956, Col. Bryan was the prime mover in the
establishment of the Manuka State Park, which today is noted for
having the best collection of native Hawaiian plants and trees.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it marks the passing of a dedicated and an esteemed
member of our island community, and recognizes the important and
long ranging contributions he has given towards the creation and
preservation of the flora of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to his wife
Mrs. Irma C. Bryan, his son Jack Bryan and his daughter, Mrs. Jean
Harrison.
