RESOLUTION NO. ' ' S3B ' ~~
WHEREAS, since its birth twenty-three years ago, Youth With A
Mission (YWAM), an interdenominational Christian organization, began
mobilizing individuals from many countries in missions with the
simple aim of creating opportunities in Christian service involving
evangelism, training and mercy ministries; and
WHEREAS, YWAM remains a completely volunteer organization
comprised of non-salaried individuals from every age group (pastors,
lay people, professionals) who are supported financially by local
churches, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, YWAM currently has approximately 3,800 full-time staff
members working in more than 115 permanent centers spanning 50
countries, in addition to 15,000 short-term volunteers annually; and
WHEREAS, the Pacific Asia Headquarters for YWAM (formerly the
site of the Pacific Empress Hotel in Kailua, Kona) has been in
operation for the past seven years and now trains nearly 1000
international students a year for short and long-term work in the
Pacific and Asian areas as well as for the rest of the world; and
WHEREAS, in addition to responding with relief aid and spiritual
comfort in crisis situations due to war and natural disaster, YWAM
volunteers are also involved in service to the citizens of Hawaii
through its Honolulu Crisis Center, Big Island school facilities,
youth center and counseling; and
WHEREAS, YWAM has continued to respond to the increased need for
skilled workers to meet these needs around the world through the
projected and ongoing construction of Hawaii's newest university,
Pacific & Asian Christian University (PACU) in Kailua-Kona; and
WHEREAS, in order to serve as a mobile, extended arm of YWAM
worldwide and PACU in particular, YWAM's Maritime Mercy Ministries
acquired in 1978 an 11,695 ton, oceangoing passenger-cargo vessel
and rechristened it the M/V ANASTASIS (Resurrection);-and
WHEREAS, during its first 18 months of operation and with a
volunteer crew of nearly 200 from over 20 nations, the Anastasia has
been able to deliver almost $2 million worth of relief goods both to
displaced Guatemalan Indians as well as to victims of Hurricane
Oscar in Tonga and Fiji recently; and
WHEREAS, THE M/V Anastasia is currently visiting six Hawaiian
ports as a recognized part of the Hawaii Statehood Silver Jubilee
Celebration before continuing on to future relief, training and
evangelism work.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its commendation and congratulations to Youth
With A Mission's Pacific & Asia Headquarters in Kailua-Kona for its
continued involvement in helping to meet the needs of the whole
person both around the world and in our local communities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council encourages YWAM and the
M/V Anastasis to continue their threefold emphasis of mercy
ministry, evangelism and equipping of workers to continue the above
mentioned work.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
hereby directed to send a true copy of this resolution to Loren
Cunningham, International Director of Youth With A Mission,
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
