RESOLUTION NO. ~1 9 ~~
WHEREAS, the week beginning March 4, 1984, is designated as
"WOMEN'S HISTORY WEEK", at which time communities around the nation
plan to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women of all
races, ages, cultures and religious faiths who have participated and
developed the rich heritage of women's contribution in the United
States of America; and
WHEREAS, Women's History Week originated in Santa Rosa,
California in 1978, to pay tribute to American women who have played
and continue to have a vital economic, cultural and social role in
every sphere of our nation's life as pioneers, nurses, doctors,
nuns, homemakers, laborers, reformers, educators, soldiers, poli-
ticians, and scientists; and
WHEREAS, the American women are noted to have had a unique and
valuable role throughout our history by providing the majority of
our nation's volunteer labor force, have been instrumental in the
establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural insti-
tutions, have been active and effective in the attainment of women's
suffrage, the emancipation movement, the labor union movement and
the modern civil rights movement; and
WHEREAS, despite these noteworthy accomplishments the importance
of women in the annals of American History has been overlooked,
undervalued and often taken for granted.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it endorses the purposes of "WOMEN'S HISTORY WEEK" and
encourages the people of the Big Island to participate in the
ceremonies and activities planned, to develop an awareness and
appreciation for the significant role women have contributed in the
history, growth and stature of our great nation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to Mrs. Elaine
Sugai, Chairperson for the 1984 "WOMEN'S HISTORY WEEK" and
Mrs. Donna Saiki, Chairperson of the Committee on the Status of
Women along with the Council's wishes of success in this observance.
