WHEREAS, Mr. Ichiro Higashi, a kama'aina resident of the
District of Kona, passed away on May 26, 1983, leaving a legacy of
achievements worthy of recognition and commemoration; and
WHEREAS, this long time owner of the I. Higashi Store was known
for his quiet, unassuming personality, but was always involved and
available to assist in the affairs of interest to the community
which he loved so dearly; and
WHEREAS, Ichiro Higashi's civic-mindedness and leadership
qualities were appropriately highlighted during the fiscal year
1982-83, whereby, for while serving as the President of the South
Kona Aloha Lions Club, he led this organization in the initiation
and completion of many worthy community oriented projects; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Higashi, a 32 year member of the Lions movement,
and in testament of his dedication and effectiveness, guided his
contingent of only 37 members in such noble humanitarian endeavors
as follows:
1. Clean-up projects involving the highways around
Napo'opo'o, Kealakekua and Honaunau.
2. Kona Hospital grounds cleanup.
3. Collected and cleaned eye glasses for re-use by
the needy.
4. Visited the elderly at Hale O' Hookipa.
5. Hosted a banquet for the pioneers of Kona.
6. Constructed two tables and a greenhouse at
Honaunau Bay.
7. Put up the community Christmas tree at the
Kealakekua Ranch Center.
8. Sponsored a Christmas party.

9. Paid for optometrical services for a visually
handicapped person.
10. Painted the Hookena and Honaunau playground
equipment.
11. Donated American flags to the third graders of
Honaunau School.
12. Participated in a Blood Bank drive.
13. Conducted a Blood Pressure Clinic.
14. Sponsored a benefit auction.
15. Donated a jungle jim set for the Milolii Beach Park.
16. Sponsored the Hookena and Honaunau Schools essay
contest.
17. Helped raise and donated funds for the Hawaii
Lions Foundation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it posthumously recognizes the many contributions, deeds
and services rendered by Mr. Ichiro Higashi and trusts that his
family and friends will continue his tradition of exemplary service
to the community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
tramsmit true copies of this resolution to Mrs. Ichiro (Kaneyo)
Higashi and Mr. R. T. "Doc" Halliday, President of the South Kona
Aloha Lions Club.
