WHEREAS, pursuant to County Charter Section 3-14 interim amendments
to the Salary Ordinance may be by resolution;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that the Salary Ordinance is hereby amended for the following departments
REGULAR COUNTY POSITIONS (Page 29)
( PART-TIME )
SECTION 8.09 (b). RECREATION DIVISION. DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION.
1. Reallocate 17 positions of Lifeguard SR -10 (3/10 time) to
Beach Lifeguard SR -10 (3/10 time).
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED.that a copy of this resolution be transmitted
to the departments of Parks and Recreationt Finance and Personnel Services
for their information.

LIFEGUARD
Duties Summary:
Watch -es< -:a swimming pool; rescues swimmers�nd''gss'ists othersin

water, safety; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:

This class differs from that of Senior Lifeguard in that the Lifeguard
performs lifeguard duties at a swimming pool to protect life, prevent accidents,
and to enforce safety regu1ati6irs; whereas the Senior Lfeguard supervises and
participates in lifeguard duties'. '
Illustrative Examples of Work:
_. Watches .people at a public swimming pool t6-'prote6t: 13€e, -prevent
accidents; rescues swimmers and assists others in distress; applies artificial
respiration and first aid, as necessary; enforces safety regulations; warns
parents or responsible adults not to leave young,children unattended; prepares
reports describing accidents, first aid given, drowning or near drownings and
other, unusual occurrences; gives instructions .in swimming and water safety;
performs a variety of duties in the operation and maintenance of a swimming pool
with responsibility for the condition and appearances of the swimming pool plant
and surrounding grounds; operates swimming pool filtering and chlorinating
equipment in accordance with printed instructions; operates water vacuum cleaner;
orders necessary supply of chemicals used; performs minor electrical, plumbing
and mechanical repair.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience

License and Certificate Requirements: Possession of a valid motor
vehicle operator's license (Type 3) and a Red Cross Senior Life Saving Certificate
or a Red Cross Water Safety instructor's Certificate, and ei -
ther. a current Red
Cress Standard First Aid Multimedia or a current Standard first Aid and Personal
Safety Certificate.
Knowledge of: techniques and methods of lifesaving; techniques of
artificial respiration; methods and practices of filtering and purifying swimming
pool water; cleaning methods and materials and equipment used.
Ability to: swim; rescue persons from the water; give first-aid;
recognize when ill or injured persons require professional medical care; write
reports describing incidents occurring in assigned area; read and follow instruc-
tions; enforce regulations; deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the
health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for perform-
ance of the duties.
Physical Effort Grouping: Special
This is an.amendment to the specification for the class
LIFEGUARD, which was approved on October 20, 1972.

BEACH LIFEGUARD
Duties Summary:

Patrols a beach area; rescues swimmers and assists others in distress;
enforces safety regulations; gives instructions in swimming and water safety;
and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Lifeguard in that the Beach Lifeguard
patrols a beach area to protect life, prevent accidents and to enforce safety
regulations; whereas the Lifeguard performs lifeguarding duties at a swimming
pool and performs a variety of duties in the operation and maintenance of a
swimming pool.
Illustrative Examples of Work:
Patrols and watches people at a beach area to protect life, prevent
accidents; rescues swimmers and assists others in distress; applies artificial
respiration and first aid, as necessary; maintains order and enforces safety
regulations; checks area for broken glass bottles, refuse, etc.; checks weather,
tide and surf condition and records same; warns parents or responsible adults not
to leave young children unattended; prepares reports describing accidents, first
aid given, drowning or near drownings and ether unusual occurrences; maintains
a daily hourly log of all beach activities.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Trainin2and Experience: A combination of education and experience
substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.
License and Certificate Requirements: Possession of a valid motor
vehicle operator's license Type 3 and a Red Cross Advanced Lifesaving and
Water Safety certificate or a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's certificate,
and either a current Red Cross Standard First Aid Multimedia or a current Standard
