NOTE: See C-37/PC-8 - Res. 16 of 1980-1984 Re: Res. 708 County of Hawaii—State of Hawaii Resolution No. 1708 WHEREAS, Piopio Street was once a main artery connecting Kilauea Street and Kamehameha Avenue through a residential area of Hilo; and WHEREAS, this Piopio Street section of Hilo had many homes where a great number of our children lived and played; and WHEREAS, a youth -oriented athletic organization known as the Piopio Bears Athletic Club was formed in 1942 in this Piopio Street area by a group of dedicated people with a desire to sponsor and provide wholesome recreation for youths, with no restrictions as to color, creed, ethnic background or financial standing; and WHEREAS, the Piopio Bears Athletic Club through efforts and programs have brought honor and recognition to our community in helping in the development of some of our most outstanding citizens; and WHEREAS, the Piopio Street area was inundated by tidal waves that destroyed many homes causing families there to relocate; "Tl el WHEREAS, the Piopio Street property was bought by the State, and with the erection of the Wailoa Center and State Building, this area has been rearranged; and WHEREAS, the major portion of Piopio Street was torn up and both the Kilauea Street and Kamehameha Avenue outlets closed with only the Piopio Street bridge over the Waiolama Canal and a short section of Piopio Street remaining which serves as part of the entrance to the Wailoa Center from Pauahi Street; and WHEREAS, this street has not been formally named nor are there any signs erected. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the Piopio Street which has been relocated so that its outlet is now onto Pauahi Street be hereby renamed Piopio Street and be dedicated to the youth, coaches and all past, present, and future members of the Piopio Bears Athletic Club. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit a true copy of this resolution to Ray Fornof, President of the Piopio Bears Athletic Club.
