WHEREAS, the Hilo Community Players has recently successfully
completed its 1979-80 Theatre Season; and
WHEREAS, as part of the 1979-80 Season, the Hilo Community
Players traveled the play, "Vanities," to the 1979 Statewide Women's
Conference in Honolulu; presented a Second Annual Shakespeare pro-
duction, "The Tempest," in Kalakaua Park which was invited to par-
ticipate at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire on Oahu; presented the
play, "The Man Who Never Died," concerning the American labor martyr,
Joe Hill, as part of a Hawaii Committee for the Humanities grant, a
project presented in cooperation with the International Longshoremen's
and Warehousemen's Union, Local 142, Hawaii Divisions presented a
Summer Children's workshop with public performances, a fall Teen
musical and a Spring Teen musical in cooperation with Hilo high School;
presented a second annual Big Island Theatre Festival open to all
theatre groups on the Island of Hawaii; presented a third annual tour-
ing theatre branch known as Hawaii Theatre Huaka'i which was awarded
a third consecutive Artists -in -the -Schools grant by the State Depart-
ment of Educations and awarded a monetary prize to the winner of its
first Island -wide Play -writing Contest; and
WHEREAS, the Hilo Community Players assisted the work of the
University of Hawaii at Hilo's Center for Continuing Education and
Community Service in bringing to Kilo The Little Theatre for the
Deaf and the Oregon Mime Company; assisted the work of the Hawaii
Concert Society in bringing to Hilo the workshops in Stagecraft by
Peter Franklin -White; and sponsored the public performances of the
Honolulu Theatre for Youth's annual Hilo tour; and
WHEREAS, the Hilo Community Players has assisted and participated
in the activities of the Merrie Monarch Festival, the third annual
Family program of Honua Hawaii, Project Holomua of the State Department
of Education, the Big Island Very Special Arts Festival, the Keaau
Elementary and Intermediate School May Day Program, the Lehua Jaycee's
First Annual Coconut Island Music, Arts and Crafts Festival, and the
International Festival contributions by the East Hawaii Cultural
Councils and
WHEREAS, the Hilo Community Players has opened its 1980-81
Theatre Season with a fourth annual Children's Theatre presentation,
"Merry Mimes and Mimics," and a third annual Shakespeare production,
"The Taming of the Shrew," presented in downtown Hilo's Kalakaua Park,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it takes this means to congratulate the Hilo Community
Players for its continuing service to the community of Hilo by the
performance of live theatre, the presentation of children and teen
theatre, and the participation in the activities of other community
service organizations.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to
Paul Mark Clark, President of the Hilo Community Players; Dorothy
Thompson, Culture and Arts Coordinator, Department of Parks and
Recreation; Frances Sherrard, President of the East Hawaii Cultural
Council; Sarah Richards, Executive Director, State Foundation on
Culture and the Arts; and Jo Diotalevi, President of the Hawaii
State Theatre Council.
