on Pxoposals for a National Academy of Peace and Conflict Resolution
held public meetings in Honolulu on July 7-8, 1980, with U. S.
Senator Spark Matsunaga serving as chairman; and
WHEREAS, the investigative seminar was to consider the size and
possible location of such an institution, to weigh alternative
grants to existing programs, evaluate other proposals that help pro-
mote peace internationally, nationally and locally; and
WHEREAS, many community leaders gave full support and urged
implementation of the National Peace Academy which will ultimately
prevent war and dilemmas similar to the hostage situation in Iran;
and
WHEREAS, the 50th State, lying in the central pacific with the
East-West Center at the University of Hawaii Campus, a state comprised
of multi-ethnic and peace loving people, is a natural setting for
this purpose and should be considered the home base of the National
Peace Academy.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it fully supports the creation of the National Peace
Academy as a first step in the solution to prevent war.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to U. S. Senator Spark Matsunaga;
U. S. Senator Mark O. Hatfield; U. S. Senator Jennings Randolph,
sponsors of the enabling bill.
