WHEREAS, the Polynesian Voyaging Society's canoe, "Hokule'a," has
completed two voyages between Hawaii and Tahiti, manned by a crew consist-
ing of sons and daughters of Hawaii, who mapped their course using
ancient navigational techniques and whose trips were wholly financed by
the private section of our community; and
WHEREAS, to preserve the Hokule'a, the Society has proposed to
use this canoe as a floating classroom and has applied to the United
States Department of Education for a $50,415 grant to pay for the
production of curriculum material and special training of selected teachers
from schools coordinating visits to the Hokule'a; and
WHEREAS, this proposed use of the Hokule'a is a unique educational
concept in fostering interest, knowledge and pride in the youth of'Hawaii
for their Polynesian heritage and would send this canoe to locations on
Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, where the Hokule'a would spend
at least two months at each of the locations, and where some 800 students
would receive instruction in ancient navigational methods and Polynesian
history.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that it urges the United States Department of Education to grant the sum
of $50,415 requested by the Polynesian Voyaging Society enabling them to
implement the "floating classroom" concept to provide instruction in
ancient navigational methods and Polynesian history to the students of our
Hawaiian Islands.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
directed to send a copy of this resolution to the United States Department
of Education; the Polynesian Voyaging Society; the Honorable U. S.
Representatives Daniel K..Akaka and Cecil Heftel; United States Senators
Daniel K. Inouye and Spark M. Matsunaga.
