WHEREAS, members of the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates Community
Association (HOVECA) recently completed building a large 40' x 80!
two-story community building without government financing; and
WHEREAS, this project began seven years ago on July 14, 1973,
when a two -acre parcel of land was purchased with an interest-free
loan made by Association members, Ray and Ruby Bollum; and
WHEREAS, the land clearing and site preparation were mainly
accomplished with donated bulldozers, and :the actual construction
was begun with a blessing cremony and luau followed by the
}pouring of cement for the first floor in late 1975; and
WHEREAS, nearly $80,000 was raised through dinners, bake sales,
flea markets, dances and other fundraisers, as well as donations
of money and materials, most importantly, thousands of hours of
labor have been volunteered by members and friends; and
WHEREAS, after long and hard work by many persons, the result
is an almost completed two-story building, which will serve as a
community center for meetings, social activities and the conducting
of public health services for senior citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII ;that it expresses its admiration and respect for these
community members for their spirit of self-reliance as manifested
in this building project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Mr. Brian Hannula,
President of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates Community Association.
