WHEREAS, Hawaii is rich in its cultural heritage and every
effort should be expended in its preservation so that future
generations will be able to appreciate the meaning of the aloha
spirit; and
WHEREAS, the East Hawaii Cultural Council has submitted a
lease agreement proposal to utilize the Old Police Station as an art
and cultural center; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 13-13(b) of the Hawaii County Charter,
all written contracts to which the County is a party shall be
authorized by the Council by resolution if legislative action is
necessary to implement the contract; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 13-13(c) of the County Charter,
the Mayor of the County of Hawaii is mandated to sign all written
contracts to which the County is a party.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it authorizes the Mayor of the County of Hawaii to
negotiate and enter into a lease contract with the East Hawaii
Cultural Council for the use of the Old Police Station located at
141 Kalakaua Street in Hilo, as an art and cultural center housing
all cultural activities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Herbert T.
Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, and Mrs. Frances Sherrard,
Chairwoman of the East Hawaii Cultural Council.
