WHEREAS, Emperor Hirohito of Japan recently bestowed upon
Mr. Susumi Yamashita the 5th Class Order of Merit Rising Sun Award,
a distinctive award given only to deserving non -nationals of Japan
in recognition and appreciation of their outstanding and exemplary
service, contributions and efforts in furthering the closer
relationship between Japan and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Yamashita was born, reared and educated in Hilo
and is remembered for his 46 years of faithful service from 1918 to
1964 as an emplgee of First ilawaiian Bank and for his 30 years as
a member of the Hawaii County Band from 1917 to 1947; and
WHEREAS, inspite of his busy career, he has actively served his
community in the past as president of such organizations as the
Waiakea Lions Club, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of
Hawaii, the Hilo Hongwanji Mission, the Honpa Hongwanji Laymen
Association, the Hawaii Island Japanese Community Association, and
the Kumamoto Doshi Kai; and
WHEREAS, Air. Yamashita further gave his time unselfishly to
become chairman of various groups as the Big Island Reception Committee,
the Committee on Japanese Immigrants 75th Year Celebration, the Puna
District Volcano Disaster Relief Committee, the Hilo District Lung
Association, the Centennial Celebrat6on on Japanese Immigration, the
Advisory Committee on Milo Branch Tea Ceremony house at Liliuokalani
Park, Committees.of Honpa.Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and Honpa
Hongwanji Council (Kyodan-Rengokai) and has served as director, advisor
or vice chairman of many other worthy activities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in recognition of this.dedicated, community -mined
individual and honored recipient of the 5th Class Order of Merit Rising
Sun Award, that the County Council extends its appreciation and
congratulations to Mr. Susumi Yamashita.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a true copy of this resolution be
presented to Mr. Susumi Yamashita at the testimonial luncheon to be
held in his honor on June 22, 1980. lRes. ,No.......
