WHEREAS, the Hawaii Army National Guard, and in particular,
the 2nd Battalion 299th Infantry here on the Big Island has
provided dependable assistance in disaster relief and public
service; and
WHEREAS, these citizen -soldiers have provided innumerable
assistance during major floodings and evacuation operations,
conducted a mercy -mission helicopter flight to Pahala to save a
child's life, performed guard duty at the Rulani Honor Camp during
the United Public Workers strike, extended the use of the Honokaa
Armory as an evacuation shelter for Waipio Valley residents, and
most recently, provided engineer assistance in clearing Waipio; and
!WBS, the Hawaii National Guard Association will hold its
annual conference on May 9, 10 and 11,'1980 in Hilo and May 12, 1980
marks the 12th anniversary of the 29th Infantry Brigade's federaliza-
tion during the Vietnam conflict; and
WHEREAS, those two events, combined with Armed Forces Day
on May 17, 1980 make it appropriate to recognize the 2nd Battalion'.'.
299th Infantry for its outstanding supportive role to the residents,
of the Big Island its well as our State and County in a highly
professional manner.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that LTC Henry S. Hara, commander of the 2nd Battalion,
CSM Mitsuo Hasegawa and all personnel of the 2nd Battalion be
commended for a job well-done.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council acknowledges its
appreciation for having such a responsive and dedicated citizen -
soldier organization to provide a solid, dependable backup to
the County during times of natural disasters and other public
needs.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be
sent to LTC Henry S. Hara; CSM Mitsuo Hasegawa; to every unit
and detachment of the 2nd Battalion; to the Honorable Governor
George R. Ariyoshi; MG Valentine Siefermann; COL Alexis Lum,
commander, HARNG, and COL Louis Perry, commander, 29th Infantry
Brigade.
