Resolution
WHEREAS, on Friday, April 16, 1980, a wind turbine generator
(WTG) and its powerhouse were dedicated at its site on the Kahua
Ranch near the crest of the Kohala mountains; and
WHEREAS, these installations are part of an overall U. S. Depart-
ment of Energy field evaluation project that will assist in the
development of wind energy in the County and the State through the
conversion of wind energy into electrical power on a small scale
and to help the private sector in determining the technical and
economic feasibility of wind energy conversions systems (WECS) as a
means of providing residential electricity; and
WHEREAS, this pilot project, using a 40 -kilowatt wind turbine
generator is already producing more than enough electricity for the
Kahua Ranch operations, was conceived within an eight-month period
at a relatively low cost of approximately $35,000; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii has the distinction of being
among the first candidates to have been considered and approved as
a project location, in which eventually 125 of these wind energy
conversion systems will be sited throughout the United States and
its territories as part of this program.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it recognizes the significance of this development and
the potential benefits it may generate, and that it commends all
those involved in this challenging joint effort.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution be
remitted to the U. S. Department of Energy; the Natural Energy
Institute, State of Hawaii; the University of Hawaii; the Hawaii
Electric Light Company; Mayor Herbert Matayoshi and Monte Richards
of Kahua Ranch, Ltd.
