HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 604 Draft 01 1976-1980RESOLUTION NO-- GG -,4 WHEREAS, the 17th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival which was held April 6 through 13th, was again acclaimed to he a tremedous cultural and entertaining success as it showcased over five hundred dancers and musicians and was viewed by thousands of spectators during the entire eight-day festival; and 1,VHEREAS, this Hawaiian extravaganza honors the memory of the last monarch, King David Laamea Kalakaua, who is credited for the renaissance of Hawaiian culture through his revival of the ancient dances, sports, chants, music and the documentation of historical data; and WHEREAS, the now prestigious meri-ie Monarch Festival features the best dancers in the state vying for the coveted Miss Aloha Hula title, plus the Hula Kahiko (ancient hula) and the Hula Auwana (modern hula) competitions in both the male and female divisions; and WHEREAS, the current success of the Festival was not achieved overnight, as it took hard work and dedication by many people in our communities contributing their time, talent and effort towards achieving the esteemed status it commands and deserves today; and WHEREAS, it is common knowledge that among the many helpers two people stand out as deserving of special recognition as it was through their initiative, persistence and expertise that has made the Merrie Monarch Festival the attraction it is today. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it now commends the Merrie Monarch Festival's perennial chairperson Dorothy "Dot" Thompson and coordinator George Naope for their outstanding contributions towards the perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture and arts through the medium of the hula and use of the Merri_e Monarch Festival as its center stage. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to Dorothy "Dot" Thompson; George Naope; Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi, and Director of Parks and Recreation Milton Ilakoda. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 7th day of May, 1980. COUNCIL MEMBERS, COUNTY qF HAWAII
